This day, which falls on the third Friday in June (this year on the 17th) was scheduled in 2007 and was born from an initiative of a Maine pub, the Tropical Smoothie Cafe, to celebrate its tenth anniversary. Dress code: rubber flip-flops, to be worn even for work. Each year, patrons who enter on flip-flop day wearing flip-flops get a free drink, but it’s also a fundraiser day for ‘Camp Sunshine’, which hosts sick children and their families.
Flip-flops are rubber shoes originally invented for use on the beach, but now used in the city too in simpler versions or decorated and enriched with details, variants that have also appeared on the catwalks of spring/summer 2022.
A basic and comfortable shoe, which later evolved into the flip-flop, was more structured and had a leather sole. From ancient history, it is thought that flip-flops were used in the times of the Egyptians, as seen in some murals. Whilst the most famous brand is the Brazilian Havaianas, which sells 150 million pairs every year, there is also a ‘Made in Italy’ production of flip-flops, which combine style and imagination, comfort and practicality.
