A book and a map to guide you through sustainable shopping for clothing and accessories
Fashion is one of the most polluting industries in the world. Renewed attention to the environment has brought the clothing and accessories sectors into the limelight, demonstrating that ethical fashion can be made without compromising on quality and creativity. An increasing number of brands, including footwear ones, employ recycled or natural materials (from waste from grape seeds, pineapple, apple, orange, etc.) and commit to producing their goods without harming the environment or people.
‘Fashion Revolution’ is a worldwide movement that promotes ethical and sustainable fashion. It is committed to creating awareness among consumers by inviting them to reflect on the source of the garments they wear and on the social conditions of those who produce them, and to give some dignity to the production chain.
Marina Spadafora, national coordinator of Fashion Revolution Italy, together with the journalist Luisa Ciuni, has written a book entitled La rivoluzione comincia dal tuo armadio (Eng. Tr. The revolution starts in your wardrobe), which includes a map for sustainable shopping in Italy.
The project started in 2019 with a call to action on social media to collect recommendations and addresses from stores or websites that sell sustainable fashion. After being screened and verified, they were put on a map, which is constantly evolving and being updated. Next to each address there are symbols corresponding to a set of categories: vintage, upcycling, artisanal/made to measure, fair trade, use of responsible materials, cruelty free, sustainable production. The book focuses on the current state of the fashion industry and on ways to make it ever more sustainable.
