Reinterpreted and glam, they are one of the best-selling shoes in the shops
Although they originated in Spain, by now all footwear brands offer them so they are produced in Italy as well. Today’s espadrilles have come a long way since the original models were first invented in the XIV century, in the Pyrenean region of Occitania and Catalonia. They became fashionable in the Eighties, due to the success of Miami Vice, and today are enjoying a second youth. While they often retain the characteristic jute rope-sole, the uppers have become decidedly glam: they come in a variety of materials ranging from cloth to leathers, but above all they are highly decorated and embroidered to make them more feminine and sophisticated.
The evolution doesn’t stop at the basic models: the cord sole changes the look of sneakers and sandals as well, by turning itself into wedges or platforms. The most up-to-the-minute models combine rope with other materials, as in the new limited edition of Marni Loony Wedges: a touch of irony is de rigueur.
