Flowers, fruit, vegetables - spring blooms on accessories

[On the cover: the flowers on Blumarine’s gladiator sandals]

It is a love affair that comes back every season, the one between fashion and nature, and spring is the season that best lends itself to this combination. Flowers, fruit, vegetables, and animals explode on clothes and accessories, printed, embroidered, applied, giving three-dimensional effects to the garments. Often it is also landscapes and natural phenomena that are reproduced by designers on clothes and fabrics: the waves of the sea, the sands of the desert, the flowering of the trees, tropical beaches, stormy skies – using the garments as canvases to convey emotions and sensations. Today, there is one more reason to talk about the harmony between fashion and nature, or better, agriculture. It is the use of ecological and bio-based fabrics and materials from food product waste, for example, the peels of apples, oranges, pineapples, grapes and mushrooms (Hermès’ use of their own material obtained from plant organisms for their bags is a recent change), the result of attention to the environment and the reduction of scraps and waste. These are the result of years of research in transformation and finishing techniques to make these materials more similar in touch to fabrics and leather. This is value that is often hidden, because the composition of the fabric is not directly perceived by sight, so the storytelling of the product becomes increasingly important.

Here are some accessories for this spring-summer that are inspired by nature.
