Stability and courage for a message of hope: Pantone's choice for next year
[On the cover: AGL SS2021 and Pantone]
If 2020 was the year of Classic Blue, 2021 will be characterised by two entirely different tonalities, luminous grey (17-5104 Ultimate Gray) and intense yellow (13-0647 Illuminating). Selected by Pantone as a colour pairing that denotes stability over time and encouragement, it conveys a message of strength and hope as we part ways with what has been a difficult year. Like every year, the Pantone Color Institute, recognised worldwide as the most authoritative voice on colour, declares the colour of the year in December, the culmination of meticulous research, the evaluation of trends in all sectors (from art to design, fashion, entertainment, lifestyles and new technologies) and the study of the psychological impact various tonalities have on people. These indications reach creative professionals way before the season for which colours are destined. Fashion has already embraced it, as can be seen in footwear for spring/ summer 2021 which features both colours, solo or alongside one another.
But what lies behind the decision of both these colours? On the website, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explains how “The mix between Ultimate Gray, stable over time, and the vibrant yellow Illuminating, conveys a message of good cheer and strength. Concrete and solid, but warm and optimistic at the same time, this colour combination conveys a sense of resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is something essential for the human mind”.
Clothing and accessories can also convey a sense of determination and courage, coupled with a sense of stability and safety: yellow is the colour of the sun, radiant in its vibrancy; grey is the colour of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose worn appearance denotes the ability to resist the passing of time.
