“Ballerina: Fashion’s Modern Muse” is the exhibition running at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York from next month.
The female muse par excellence, ballerinas have always inspired fashion. The Christian Dior spring/summer 2019 show is a case in point, as it was dominated by delicate shoes evoking those normally paired with tutus. The exhibition tells the story of the relationship between classical ballet – where the ballerina is synonymous with beauty and glamour – and fashion, through a number of objects ranging from dresses and original ballet shoes to high fashion pieces, particularly those dating from the 1930s to the 1950s inspired by classic ballets such as Giselle and Swan Lake.
Dresses by Chanel, Dior and Balmain will be on display, alongside a pair of black leather “fetish” shoes by Christian Louboutin (2014).
